The Chinese Academy of Sciences launched the "Chinese Population Accurate Medical Research Program" completed in four years

The reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 10th that it will complete the collection of DNA samples and phenotypic data of 4,000 volunteers within 4 years, and conduct in-depth precision medical research on 2,000 of them. The research includes genome-wide sequence analysis, establishment of genomic health records, and early warning and intervention studies on genetic signals for important chronic diseases.

The “Chinese Accurate Medical Research Program” was conducted by the Interdisciplinary Team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by the Beijing Genomics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Among them, the Key Laboratory of Precision Genomics Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in 2014, is the first key laboratory in China to conduct in-depth research in this area.

Zeng Changqing, the director of the laboratory and the chief scientist of the China Population Accurate Medical Research Program, said that the major problem facing the current medical science is complex diseases. Complex diseases such as tumors and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases called "chronic diseases" threaten human health. Because of the differences in economic development and lifestyle, the spectrum of disease has changed, and the pathology and efficacy of different patients in the same disease are very different, leading to the inefficiency or even ineffectiveness of treatment on a global scale.

Zeng Changqing introduced that precision medicine conducts disease prevention and control for individual genomic and phenotypic characteristics. After the formation of individual genomic information and disease molecular mechanisms, medical workers can conduct accurate warning and treatment. The study requires long-term dynamic detection and analysis of a large number of clinical phenotypes based on multiple sets of data from large populations.

The United States announced the launch of the "Millions of Precision Medicine Research" in early 2015. The China Precision Medicine Key Project, hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, has also been approved to be given priority in the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. The Chinese Academy of Sciences expects that the “Chinese Population Accurate Medical Research Program” will lay the foundation for follow-up research and provide universal benefits to the future.
