This vaccine contains the HIV surface protein gp120, and the engineered protein binds to a portion of the protein called the CD4 receptor. When HIV infects a cell, gp120 first binds to the CD4 receptor on the white blood cell and then transforms in such a way that the hidden part of the virus is exposed, allowing it to bind to the second receptor CCR5 on the immune cell. Once bound to both receptors, HIV enters white blood cells and produces infection. The goal of the above HIV vaccine is to produce antibodies that bind to HIV gp120 protein in this transformed state, ultimately preventing binding to CCR5 and terminating the infection process. The development of this vaccine was led by IHV's George Lewis.

Gallo, 78, said it took a long time for the vaccine to go to the clinic because he and his team members had extensive tests on monkeys and had to go for funding.
