Due to the lack of teeth, many people have the need to implant their teeth, but the treatment cycle is at least half a year, and the cost is tens of thousands of dollars. The process is prohibitive. Recently, at the 3D printing strategy seminar held by Beijing University of Technology, Tang Zhihui, a professor at Peking University School of Stomatology, revealed that his team is carrying out a national key research and development program “Development of 3D printed personalized dental implants”, and future 3D printing planting. The teeth can significantly reduce surgical trauma, simplify the implantation process, reduce the treatment cycle to one to two hours, and reduce costs by half.

Statistics show that in 2015, the global dental implant usage was about 18 million, while China only accounted for 400,000, the proportion is less than 3%. The important reason is that the planting technology is complex and the implant market has long been monopolized by foreign products. The price is high.

Tang Zhihui introduced that when using traditional cone-shaped implants during dental implants, it is necessary to undergo minimally invasive extraction, pre-planting dental implants, implanted bone powder, covering collagen membrane, embedded healing, second-stage surgery, crown making and wearing In the other steps, the treatment cycle takes about 6 to 8 months, and the doctor's operation time is about 8 hours. The cost is about 16,000 yuan per piece. For complex situations, time and costs will increase further. At the same time, there are still many shortcomings in this way, including because the implanted implants are not in close contact with the extraction sockets, and it is necessary to implant bones immediately after tooth extraction, and it is difficult to repair them immediately.

Tang Zhihui's research team is working on the development of 3D printed personalized anatomical root implants. Currently, they have developed oral cone beam CT image data processing and implant shape design software, and 3D printed anatomical root implants. In-depth research on precision, biomechanics, implant surface treatment, and osseointegration rate of implanted animals has been completed, and relevant preclinical tests and animal experiments have been completed, and will enter the clinical research stage.
