To some extent, the speed control of a car is similar to that of an ultrasonic breaker. The role of the car's speed control device is to keep the car running at a steady speed. The road requirements are different and the horsepower requirements will be different. The speed control device detects the horsepower demand and automatically adjusts the power emitted by the engine to compensate for changing road conditions. The steeper the slope, the greater the resistance to vehicle motion. To overcome this resistance, the engine emits more power.

The sonicator is designed to emit a constant amplitude. As the resistance to probe motion increases, the power required increases. The power supply device detects this need and automatically increases the amount of power emitted to keep the amplitude of the probe tip constant. Under the same load conditions, the wattages emitted by two different rated power supply units will be the same (assuming both have sufficient power capacity).

The AMPLITUDE (amplitude) control device can be used to set the ultrasonic oscillation of the probe tip to any desired value. Although the degree of cavitation required to process a sample can be conveniently determined by eye observation, the amount of power required cannot be predicted. A detection network continuously detects output requirements and automatically adjusts the power to maintain the amplitude at a preselected level. The higher the viscosity, the deeper the probe is immersed in the sample, the larger the probe diameter, or the greater the pressure, the greater the resistance to probe motion and the higher the power delivered to the probe. Twist the AMPLITUDE control knob completely clockwise without sending the maximum power to the sample. The maximum power emitted by the sonicator will only be issued if the resistance to the movement of the probe is high enough to extract the maximum amount of wattage.
