JCI Insight: Retinal scanning technology or detectable signs of Alzheimer's disease

Release date: 2017-08-25

Alzheimer's disease (AD), also known as Alzheimer's disease, is an age-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive decline in the brain, including memory loss during early onset, emotional abnormalities, and gradual Losing the ability to take care of themselves not only causes the suffering of the patients, but also imposes a heavy burden on the family and society.

Alzheimer's disease is still unpreventable, treatable and cured. As human lifespan increases, the number of elderly people increases, and more and more people with Alzheimer's disease. In the United States alone, more than 5 million people suffer from Alzheimer's disease. When many patients are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the disease often develops into the middle and late stages. Some studies have found that Alzheimer's patients may have pathological changes in the brain more than a decade before the onset of obvious symptoms. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention are of great significance for delaying the occurrence and development of Alzheimer's disease and reducing the burden of family and social care.

Recently, a study published in the JCI Insight magazine showed that Alzheimer's patients showed a large number of retinopathy, including the signature amyloid deposition. Alzheimer's disease is detected by retinal scanning with high specificity and sensitivity. This study is one of the major breakthroughs in Alzheimer's disease research and is expected to develop a low-cost, non-invasive test that promotes early diagnosis and more effective interventions for high-risk populations.

The study's lead author, Dr. Maya Koronyo-Hamaoui, a neurosurgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States, said the findings suggest that the retina may be a reliable basis for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. . One of the main advantages of analyzing the retina is reproducibility, which allows us to detect potential patients and follow up on disease progression.

Ten years ago, the only way to officially diagnose Alzheimer's disease was to analyze their brains after death. In recent years, doctors have been able to use PET to scan the patient's brain to determine the marker of the disease. However, PET examinations are expensive and invasive because patients need to inject radiotracers.

Dr. Koronyo-Hamaoui's team has been working on a lower cost, less invasive technology. They and NeuroVision Imaging in Sacramento, Calif., the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the University of Southern California, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) People collaborate to apply their non-invasive eye screening techniques to humans.

In this study, the researchers conducted a clinical trial of 16 patients who drank a solution containing curcumin, a natural component of turmeric. Curcumin causes the amyloid plaque in the retina to "light up" and can be detected by scanning.

The researchers then compared the patients to young, cognitively healthy individuals and found that their findings were as accurate as those detected by standard invasive methods.

Another key finding of the study was the discovery of amyloid plaques by researchers in previously overlooked areas of the retina. The number of plaques on the retina is related to the number of plaques in a particular area of the brain.

Dr. Keith L. Black, director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Heddes-Sinai Medical Center in the United States, who is also the principal investigator of the study, said the study provides hope for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. We hope that retinal scanning technology can be used as a screening tool to detect the disease as early as possible in order to intervene to change the course of the disease through drugs and lifestyle changes.

Water Test Strips 15 Parameters

Detection method:
visual
Operation method:
1. Visual inspection: Immerse the test area of the test paper into the fully stirred fresh drinking water, and take it out immediately;

2. Put the edge of the strip against the edge of the container to remove excess water samples;

3. Compare the test strip with the colorimetric table on the bottle label, and record the test result in the determination time: 0 ~ 60 seconds. Use visual.

Storage conditions:
The test paper should be stored in room temperature, dry environment, away from a variety of chemical reagent environment, avoid direct sunlight. This product does not need to be refrigerated (if it is stored for a long time, it should be restored to room temperature and opened for use).
