A team led by Professor Jin Zhen (Mechanical Engineering) of Osaka University in Japan recently announced that they have successfully developed a new method for assessing the risk of diseases such as myocardial infarction by measuring the "hardness" of red blood cells in the blood. Specific results have been published in the electronic version of the well-known Swiss scientific journal.

The researchers said that they hope to apply the technology to disease diagnostic equipment, and will cooperate with medical companies to develop practical research and development.

The blood is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The size of red blood cells is generally between 6-8 microns. The red blood cells of healthy people are very soft, and they can keep flowing through deformation even in tiny blood vessels. If you are in a state of eating and drinking for a long time, the red blood cells will harden and the flow in the blood vessels will become less smooth. This will cause an unnecessary burden on the heart that is responsible for delivering blood, and cause diseases such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. The risk of illness increases.

The team installed three types of tubules in the microchip, all of which are between 3.5 and 4.5 microns in diameter, similar in size to very small blood vessels. In the experiment, the team members injected the blood of heart disease patients and healthy people into the thin tube, and used a high-speed camera to shoot the speed of the red blood cells passing through the thin tube. The survey found that harder red blood cells in heart patients spend more time with thin tubes than healthy people.
