Release date: 2017-11-07 Source: Science Network Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients(API) refer to the raw materials used in the production of various preparations. They are the effective ingredients in the preparations. They are various powders, crystals, extracts, etc., prepared by chemical synthesis, plant extraction or biotechnology, but Substances that the patient cannot take directly. API is intended to be used in any substance or mixture of substances in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, and when used in pharmaceuticals, it becomes an active ingredient of the pharmaceuticals. Such substances have pharmacological activity or other direct effects in the diagnosis, treatment, symptom relief, treatment or prevention of diseases, or can affect the function or structure of the body. According to its source, active pharmaceutical ingredients are divided into two categories: synthetic chemical active Pharmaceutical ingredients and natural chemical active Pharmaceutical ingredients. A study published in the journal Frontiers of Human Neuroscience found that inhaling pure oxygen can repair brain damage after many years of concussion.
Concussion is common in contact sports and soldiers. Most people recover after a short period of unconsciousness or amnesia, but 5% experience long-term symptoms such as headaches, mood changes, sleep disorders, and cognitive problems. This is called a post-concussion syndrome.
For example, former National Football League player Ryan Miller disclosed his experiences with migraine, depression, memory loss and epilepsy this year. These illnesses lasted 2 years after he retired from the league.
These neurological symptoms occur because the impact on the head damages tiny blood vessels in the brain. This makes oxygen harder to reach and thus does not provide nutrients to brain cells.
Shai Efrati and colleagues from Tel Aviv University in Israel have been studying whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help the disease. The therapy involves sitting in a high pressure chamber and breathing 100% oxygen to increase the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood and flowing into the brain.
In a study published in 2013, scientists found that 40 hyperbaric oxygen regimens (one hour each) significantly improved cognitive function and quality of life in 56 patients with post-concussion syndrome. They developed these symptoms after a car accident, fall, attack, or other non-military injury, and these accidents occurred as early as six years ago.
Today, researchers use magnetic resonance imaging to analyze how hyperbaric oxygen produces this therapeutic effect. The study found that in 15 patients who suffered head injuries 6 to 27 months ago, the therapy stimulated vascular and nerve fiber regeneration. “Once the extra oxygen seeps into the damaged area, it provides energy and the regeneration process takes place,†says Efrati.
However, the use of hyperbaric oxygen to treat post-concussion syndromes is controversial because a large-scale military trial published in 2015 stated that the method did not work.
